Astronomer, engineer, physicist, designer and architect

Educated at Westminster and Oxford but never received any formal architectural training but interest grew out of science knowledge (admired by Isaac Newton).

Fellow of All Saint’s College, Oxford (1653) until he became the Professor of Astronomy at Gresham College London in 1657.

Largely responsible for the rebuilding of the London churches after the Great Fire including:

St Paul’s Cathedral

St Mary-le-Bow

St Clement Danes

St Brides

Founding member of the Royal Academy of Arts

Other works include:

Pembroke Hall, Cambridge

Sheldonian Theatre, Oxford

Trinity College library, Cambridge

The Royal Observatory

Chelsea Hospital

Knighted in 1673
