Impressionism

This movement started in the 19th century largely in France.  Characteristics of art of the time were an open composition, the use of light and visible brush strokes.  Once again this was a reaction against the heavy, traditional styles that were prevalent at the time.

More lively that its earlier relative artists were thrilled by the use of colour, pattern and form
