Architect and dramatist (wrote The Relapse and The Provoked Wife – sexually explicit and in defence of women’s rights in marriage) Purchased land in
London and acquired backers for the construction of the Queen’s Theatre,
Haymarket, London (designed by Vanbrugh) – the management of the theatre
did not work well, despite the attempt by Vanbrugh and Congreve to
re-introduce ‘proper’ theatre to London rather than dancing troupes,
opera and pantomime He was a Whig and a member of the Kit Kat Club – friends with Sir Robert Walpole, the Earl of Burlington and William Congreve
Architecturally, he created the style known as English Baroque, despite having no formal training as an architect. Had an eye for perspective and detail and work closely with Nicholas Hawksmoor the former clerk of Sir Christopher Wren 1702 – appointed Comptroller of the Royal Works 1703 – appointed Commissioner of Greenwich Hospital Major projects included: Castle Howard Blenheim Palace Seaton Delaval hall Remodelled Kimbolton Castle Work on follies at Stowe, Buckinghamshire Elements of Chatham Dockyard
