Educated by Christopher Wren

Unlike many of contemporaries never travelled on Grand Tour

Worked with Wren on Chelsea Hospital, Greenwich Hospital and various churches in London

Later worked with Vanbrugh on Blenheim Palace and Castle Howard

His own style varied from his two ‘teachers’ – was neither particularly graceful nor very ornate.

1705 – Deputy Surveyor of Works

Largely worked on churches and universities

His style was versatile:

All Soul’s College, Oxford (Gothic)

Queen’s College, Cambridge (Baroque)

Clarendon building (Classical)
