Scottish architect, interior and furniture designer

Studied at the Royal High School and the University of Edinburgh before working with his brother John on Hopetoun House, near Edinburgh

1754 made the Grand Tour of France and Italy to hone skills before turning to set up business in London

Preferred style was Palladianism but was also influenced by Baroque, Greek and Byzantine styles.

Member of the Royal Academy of Arts from 1758 and the Society of Antiquaries from 1761.

Major projects included: 

Kenwood House, Hampstead

Alnwick Castle, Northumberland

Adelphi, London

Pulteney Bridge, Bath

Culzean Castle, Ayrshire
