An early 18th
century French style, initially, was a continuation of the Baroque style but
whilst its predecessor had been heavy and dark Rococo, by comparison, was light,
graceful and almost frivolous.
Furniture and
metalwork were asymmetrical with plenty of ‘curly-bits’ almost to the
point of madness.
The movement was
also inspired by ‘newly’ acquired knowledge of Chinese arts.
In interior design
the palette was soft and pale, ceilings, friezes and cornices were
highly carved and stucco was widely used.
