Not many movements have crossed all the arts but this is one of those that achieved this.  A movement that started in Western Europe in the 18th century during the growth of the Industrial Revolution it was a reaction against the loss of the traditional way of life that was a natural result of the increasing use of factories and mechanisation.  It, therefore, set out to emphasise the awe and horror of Nature and elevated styles that were contrary to everything that would be epitomised by the use of machinery.  It idealised folk art and custom as well as medievalism.

One of the strong principles of Romanticism was the importance of nationalism hence the reason why, perhaps, the movement was strong in Britain very early in its development but only took hold in France after the defeat of Napoleon.

Examples of designers, architects, writers and artists of the time include –

Turner
Constable
Shelley
Byron
Keats
