Possibly the most recognised style of the Twentieth Century and certain one
of the most popular. Spanning two decades it was as though the
people who had lived through the First World War wanted to wipe away all
memories of that time and the previous, lost lives. It was a time when modern technology introduced us to global travel - if only
initially to the rich - by using ocean going liners and aeroplanes on a far
grander scale than ever before. It gave us an ins ight into the past lives
of the citizens of other countries through the discoveries in Egypt and South
America. It also gave us the movie - taking the watcher away from their
ordinary lives to far off lands and to experience adventures like never before.
With the Wall Street Crash of 1929 the movies also gave hope for a better life
(again) and uplifting song and dance routines by Fred and Ginger. It was
truly a period of eclecticism.
It was a time of streamlining design but it was also the time when traditional patterns could be used but in
a more gentle manner than had been prevalent previously.
The Art Deco period was known in many countries around the world France,
Germany and America in particular. You only have to think of the Paris
exhibition of 1925 which brought the decorative style to the world or to the
buildings of Miami and the Chrysler Building in New York or indeed the work of
the Bauhaus Movement movement. It was a reaction
to the Art Nouveau designs of the early decades of
the century
