This movement of the latter 19th/early 20th centuries derived its name from
the Maison de L'Art Nouveau design gallery in Paris. In different
countries it was called many things which largely reflected its origins as
mainly an English style of design. So, for instance, in Italy it was
called Stile Liberty after the London store - Liberties - in France it was known
as English Style. Just as it was called different things in these
countries so the style was adapted slightly to suit the requirements of each
nation. It was a time of not looking back in history but giving consideration to
Nature so writhing stems and leaves were the norm and was somewhat rooted (no
pun intended!) in the images by William Morris.
The classic entrance to a Paris Metro station highlights the key features of
this movement.
